Overview

The Mercedes Little G now has a deadline. Mercedes will reveal the smaller G-Class within 24 months, CEO Ola Källenius told Bloomberg, according to Road & Track. Because the interview ran in October, 24 months from then puts the reveal in October 2028 at the latest.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach added a warning for G Wagon fans. Speaking at the company’s 140 Festival in Stuttgart on October 17, he said the Little G will target a different segment. In his words, it “won’t target the real G customer.”

Below, a status table separates what Mercedes confirmed from what reports add and what stays unknown. A buying plan follows for shoppers who need a small 4×4 before the Mercedes baby G exists.

Whichever small 4×4 you drive while you wait for the Little G, tire pressure sets your traction on the trail. An air-down kit handles the job: the ARB E-Z digital deflator drops pressure, the VIAIR 400P compressor refills tires, and the ARB Speedy Seal 2 plugs punctures.

What Mercedes Confirmed About the Little G

Executives have discussed this model since 2023, yet Mercedes has shown only teasers. The table sorts each claim by source, because source decides how much weight a claim carries.

Item Status Source
Different buyer than the full-size G Stated by Mercedes Weckbach, October 2026
Reveal in less than 24 months Stated by Mercedes Källenius, Bloomberg interview
Gas and electric versions Stated by Mercedes Schiebe, Automotive News, spring 2026
Build in Kecskemét, Hungary Reported Automotive News, July 2026
Price, specs and final name (Mercedes GLG is one outlet’s guess) Not announced None

Michael Schiebe, then Mercedes-AMG CEO, confirmed gas and electric versions this spring, per Automotive News. Motor1 also reports North American dealers pushed hard for the gas option. Mercedes has named no specific engine.

The timing needs a careful read. Automotive News earlier reported the model is expected in the first half of 2027, while Källenius spoke of a reveal less than 24 months out. Both statements fit, since a first-half 2027 debut falls inside a 24-month window. For comparison, see what Land Rover has and has not confirmed about its unfinished pickup.

A Different Buyer From the Full-Size G-Class

Weckbach separated the two models on purpose. Specifically, the smaller one will be “significantly different” from the original, he said, although it shares some traits with the bigger truck. Road & Track notes test mules have appeared all over Europe, so the shape is no secret.

Källenius then described the full-size G on the Schöckl, its Austrian proving mountain. There, he said, it descends at roughly 37 to 43 mph. He did not promise the Little G would match this speed. Instead, he said the Little G will have strong off-road capability.

According to Motor1, engineering work centers on suspension geometry, wheel size and axle articulation. Because these parts decide trail behavior, they matter more than the badge.

Production is a separate story. Automotive News reported in July a plan to build the compact G in Hungary, although Mercedes has not confirmed this. For history on the original, read how the full-size G-Class evolved from its boxy origins.

Mercedes Little G vs. the Full-Size G-Class

Price shows the clearest gap. Mercedes-Benz USA lists the G 550 from $153,900. The electric G 580 starts at $163,750 per Mercedes-Benz USA, which lists 579 hp, 859 lb-ft and a 249-mile EPA range. Motor1 adds a $1,450 destination fee.

Mercedes has not priced the Little G. TopElectricSUV expects roughly $70,000, but this is an outside estimate, not a Mercedes figure. The Ineos Grenadier Station Wagon starts at $71,750 before destination, so such a price would come close.

Capability comparisons have to wait. Mercedes lists up to about 33 inches of wading depth for the G 580. In contrast, it has published no wading figure, ground clearance, locker count or tow rating for the Little G.

So treat any head-to-head claim as a guess. Until Mercedes publishes specs, the safest comparison is the buyer each truck targets.

What the Mercedes Little G Means for You

First, do not wait on a vehicle with no price. If you want a G now, buy the full-size G 550 from $153,900, or look elsewhere. Waiting makes sense only if you want a smaller G and Mercedes prices it below the full-size truck. Mercedes has not promised that.

Next, set a spec checklist. When Mercedes shows the Little G, check ground clearance, approach and departure angles, locking differentials and axle articulation first. These numbers tell you whether it is a trail tool or a stylish commuter.

Then price the alternatives on sale today. The Range Rover Sport Electric shows how a luxury maker electrifies a capable SUV, while our Ineos Grenadier pricing story lists a current incentive.

I have owned five Jeeps: two Grand Cherokee Overlands, two Wranglers and a Gladiator. This mix of Overland comfort and Wrangler toughness makes me wary of any 4×4 sold on shape alone. If you like the shape and want luxury, add the Little G Wagon to a watch list, then move it to your shortlist once the spec sheet lands.

Whichever 4×4 you drive while you wait, a recovery kit matters more than a spec sheet the moment you get stuck. Start with a pair of MAXTRAX MKII boards, the ARB705LB snatch strap from ARB and a WARN 92093 shackle, especially on a small rig.

Final Thoughts

The Mercedes Little G would be good news if you love the G shape and want to stay under six figures, provided Mercedes prices it there. A second, smaller G also suggests where Mercedes sees growth: buyers who want style with some capability.

Still, a deadline is not a spec sheet. Mercedes gave no price, no named engine and no full reveal. Therefore, I would hold my judgment until I see ground clearance and articulation numbers, and I would not delay a purchase you need this season.

If you want a small luxury 4×4 now, shop what is on sale and keep the Little G as a possible next step. When Mercedes shows the real thing, we will compare it against the rivals on your list.
