Over the last few years, something strange has happened in the overlanding world.

Scroll through Instagram and it looks like you need a $80,000–$100,000 build just to leave pavement.

Massive suspension upgrades.
Rooftop tents.
Drawer systems.
$3,000 refrigerators.
Thousands in armor and accessories.

But here’s the truth most people don’t talk about…
You don’t need any of it to start exploring.

In this video, I break down the real difference between Instagram overland builds and real-world overlanding setups.

I’m comparing two rigs I saw at the same trailhead:
• A $95,000 fully built rig
• A $4,200 simple setup

- Both owners camped.
- Both watched the sunset.
- Both woke up in the desert.

But one of them had 12 years of real overlanding experience.

And it wasn’t the one with the expensive truck.

If you’re thinking about getting into overlanding, this video will help you understand:

    - What expensive builds actually get right
    - Where Instagram builds get it completely wrong
    - What experienced overlanders really run
    - How to start exploring without spending a fortune

Because the truth is…

Overlanding has never been about the truck.

It’s about where the truck takes you.

Instagram Overland Builds Are LYING to You (The Truth)

4wdTALK 20 hours ago

After testing diesel and gas heaters for the overlanding and camping world for the last 6 years, it takes a lot to get me genuinely excited about something new.

Before heading out of town, I met with the owners of Houswin and got a live demonstration of a heater that honestly surprised me - because it’s doing something I haven’t seen before in this space.

This is a self-generating portable diesel heater designed for off-grid use… meaning it produces its own power while running and doesn’t rely on an external battery or power station.

In this video, I’m sharing:

✔️ My first impressions after a live demo with the owners
✔️ Why this heater stands out from anything I’ve tested so far
✔️ The on-paper specs and claimed features
✔️ A look at the unit sitting here in my studio
✔️ Why I’m genuinely excited about its potential for winter camping

⚠️ Important: This is NOT a full field test yet.

Right now, we’re looking at specs, design, and first impressions.

Once I get back in town, I’ll be taking this heater into the field for a real-world demonstration so we can see how it performs in actual overlanding and winter camping conditions.

Check out this heater for yourself: http://houswin.us/

I Built a COMPLETE Overlanding Setup on Amazon… for LESS Than You Think

4wdTALK February 27, 2026 6:16 pm

If you are new to overlanding, this video could save you thousands of dollars and a lot of frustration. I break down the ten most common beginner overlanding mistakes, from overspending on mods to exceeding your vehicle weight rating, running the wrong tires, skipping recovery gear, and more. Each mistake includes real dollar amounts, real consequences, and the practical fix so you can avoid learning these lessons the hard way.

This is not theory. These are mistakes I have seen repeated over and over, backed by real repair costs and real recovery bills from the overlanding community.

What you will learn in this video:

• Why spending big on mods before your first trip backfires
• How most built rigs exceed their gross vehicle weight rating without the owner knowing
• The one upgrade every overlander should make first
• Recovery gear mistakes that have caused serious injuries
• Simple pre-trip checks that prevent $1,000 to $4,000 repair bills
• Why your phone is not a backcountry navigation plan

TRP4x4 Mammoth 40L Fridge Review: 4 Weeks of Real-World Testing

4wdTALK February 11, 2026 6:07 pm

Last Thursday, Caleb and I drove up to a quiet spot we discovered the week prior to test out the Montana Canvas Bridger Tent in real-world conditions.

In this video, I walk you through the complete setup process, give you a full interior and exterior tour, and show you exactly how I configured the tent with my typical cold-weather camping gear. Montana Canvas has built a strong reputation over the years for producing high-quality canvas tents, and the Bridger Tent is designed to be a versatile option for overlanders, campers, and anyone looking for a durable, long-term shelter solution.

But as always, I wanted to test it myself and see how it performs in the field.

In this video, I cover:

• Complete Montana Canvas Bridger Tent setup from start to finish
• Full walkthrough of the tent’s design and features
• My interior gear setup for comfort and cold-weather camping
• Build quality, materials, and overall craftsmanship
• What I really like about this tent
• A few things I think could be improved
• Who this tent is best suited for

Canvas tents have become increasingly popular among overlanders and campers looking for durability, comfort, and four-season capability. After spending time with the Bridger Tent, I can see why Montana Canvas has earned the reputation they have.

Testing the Montana Canvas Bridger Tent in the Wild — Full Setup, Walkthrough, and Honest Review

4wdTALK February 10, 2026 9:26 pm

Last weekend, my son and I headed up near Big Bear to set up and test the Elk Mountain 13x16 Wall Tent with Awning, and I have to say, this tent represents a completely different level of camping.

In this video, I’ll walk you through the full setup process, share my first impressions, and give you a detailed walkaround of all the features. I’ll also cover what I like, what I don’t like, and who this tent is really designed for.

Large wall tents like this aren’t just tents, they create a true basecamp experience. Whether you're heading out with your family for a weekend in the mountains, setting up a comfortable long-term hunting camp, or simply want a shelter that feels more like a cabin than a tent, wall tents offer a level of comfort, space, and durability that’s hard to match.

Unlike traditional camping tents, wall tents allow you to stand up, move around freely, bring proper beds, heaters, and gear, and stay comfortable regardless of the weather. For hunters, overlanders, and families alike, this kind of setup transforms camping from “roughing it” into something far more enjoyable and sustainable.

In this video, you’ll see:

    - Full setup of the Elk Mountain 13x16 Wall Tent with Awning
    - Detailed walkaround and feature breakdown
    - My honest first impressions
    - What I like and don’t like so far
    - Why wall tents are one of the best investments for serious camping or hunting
