Overview: What the Range Rover Recall Covers

The Range Rover recall covers 93,997 SUVs from the 2022 through 2026 model years. Jaguar Land Rover North America filed it with NHTSA as campaign 26V678, and JLR calls it recall D171. When the tailgate drains poorly, water pools around the rearview camera. The touchscreen image then turns blurry or goes blank.

According to the recall report, a blurred or missing image might leave the driver unaware of objects or pedestrians. As a result, the risk of an injury or a crash rises. However, JLR reports no accidents, injuries or fires in the US tied to the problem.

The repair also costs you nothing.

Dealers will drill extra drain holes in the underside of the tailgate trim. They then check the camera and replace it if needed. JLR plans to mail owner letters on or before Dec. 11, 2026.

NHTSA announced the recall on Friday, Oct. 23, according to Reuters. If you own a Range Rover, start with what to do first. The filing names only the Range Rover, so the Sport sits outside this recall. For a different Sport problem, see our report on the Range Rover Sport rear subframe recall.

A rear-facing dash cam records behind the SUV, but it does not replace the factory camera or show a live view on the touchscreen. The Vantrue N4 Pro S 4K 3 Channel Dash Cam and the ROVE R2-4K Dual Dash Cam fit any Range Rover, and ZEISS Pre-Moistened Lens Cleaning Wipes keep the lenses clear.

Why Water Pools Around the Camera

First, the tailgate carries a water management system meant to send water away from the camera. JLR’s report says the drainage might not be sufficient. Water then pools around the camera installation, and over time it damages the unit.

The touchscreen then shows a distorted image or none at all. In addition, JLR estimates all 93,997 SUVs carry the condition. You do not need to see a symptom before the recall applies.

What the Claims Show

In total, JLR received 2,295 claims and field reports about camera replacements in the US. They run from Aug. 3, 2022 to Sept. 28, 2026. Spread across 93,997 SUVs, the count works out to about 2.4 claims per 100 vehicles. The filing does not say whether each claim covers a different SUV.

Replacement rates in the US and Canada ran higher than in other markets. Even so, JLR told NHTSA the market-by-market gap is not fully explained.

How JLR Reached the Recall Decision

JLR did not act overnight. It opened an investigation on July 31, 2026, after warranty data showed camera replacements running unusually high in the US and Canada. Next, on Aug. 8, its review forum noted the earlier Discovery recall, D145, for rearview cameras. It also asked for more field evidence. Removed cameras from US vehicles then went to the supplier for analysis.

By Sept. 18, JLR’s review committee learned of a new evidence requirement for approving camera replacements. The claim rate had apparently fallen sharply. Then on Oct. 6, the supplier’s first results showed most analyzed parts had failed from water ingress. Finally, the decision forum ordered the recall on Oct. 8.

The Free Fix and the Owner Timeline

The remedy has two parts. Technicians drill additional drain holes in the underside of the tailgate trim holding the camera. They also verify the camera works and replace it if required. JLR calls this a permanent repair at no charge.

Dealers get notice on Oct. 29, 2026, before owners hear anything. Owner letters then follow on or before Dec. 11, 2026. The filing labels the mailing interim and sets no date for the remedy letter.

SUVs built after June 4, 2026 sit outside the recall. JLR introduced a revised seal on the camera’s tailgate trim piece on June 4. The last covered build date is also June 4, and the filing does not say whether SUVs built on June 4 carry the new seal.

Meanwhile, Canadian owners get the same remedy under Transport Canada recall 2026498, which lists 2022 through 2026 Range Rovers.

What the Range Rover Recall Means for You

Check Your VIN First

Enter your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup, or call JLR at 800-637-6837. The lookup might show nothing yet, since the filing lists no date for it. Confirm your SUV is a Range Rover, since the filing names only the Range Rover and not the Sport. Discovery owners should look for the separate D145 recall, NHTSA 26V458.

Call Your Dealer Early About the Range Rover Recall

Next, call your dealer after Oct. 29 instead of waiting for the mail. Ask about parts, how long the appointment takes, and whether a past camera replacement qualifies for repayment. The filing points to JLR’s general reimbursement plan, so keep every invoice. If a dealer turned down your camera claim in recent months, ask again about the recall repair.

My advice is to move early. An early call costs you nothing, and letters go out as late as Dec. 11.

What to Do Until the Repair

Until the repair, treat the camera as a helper and keep checking your mirrors. Check the image each time you shift into reverse, especially after rain or a car wash. If the picture looks blurry or blank, turn your head. Also, step out to look when space is tight. Our Ram 1500 backup camera recall report also covers spotters and walk-around checks for truck owners.

Protect Your Interior While You Wait

Wet weather tests more than the camera. Fitted floor liners keep rain and mud off the carpet while you wait for a repair appointment. Neither product below fixes the recall. WeatherTech Custom Fit FloorLiners fit 5-passenger, standard-wheelbase Range Rovers. WENNEBIRD lists mats for the 2022-2026 Range Rover, not the Sport.

If You Are Shopping Used

Shopping for a used 2022 to 2026 Range Rover? Run the VIN before you sign, and ask for proof of the repair. An SUV built on or before June 4, 2026 falls in the recall even if the camera works today.

Final Thoughts

A rearview camera is a small part, but you use it every time you reverse. This recall is large, yet the mechanism is simple and the repair is free: extra holes and a camera check.

JLR reports no crashes, injuries or fires in the US. It also corrected the design in production with a revised seal on June 4, 2026. Still, 2,295 camera claims sit behind this filing, so treat a blurry screen as a warning.

If you are weighing the brand more widely, our look at Land Rover Defender reliability in 2026 adds owner context. A free permanent fix is a fair ask. Check your VIN today, then call the dealer after Oct. 29. Keep your invoices, and use your mirrors until the repair is done.
