Spider Roof Rack lists the ALL-TOP Apexcamp as a three-person tent. After climbing inside, we disagree. This $1,799 hard shell wedge tent gives two adults a 90 by 51.5 inch deck, an inch and a half narrower than a standard full mattress. Also, a dog or a small kid fits alongside. Three adults do not.

Two competitors back our read, notably. Similarly, iKamper rates the wider BDV Duo at one to two people, and Thule rates the 51-inch Basin Wedge at two. Therefore call the Apexcamp a two-and-a-half person tent instead.

The retailer’s spec table also lists the opening style as clam shell, which contradicts both the geometry and the marketing. Instead, the shell hinges at one end and rises to a 59-inch peak on two nitrogen gas struts, exactly like a wedge. At 59 inches the peak matches the iKamper BDV Duo and beats the Thule Basin Wedge at 46 inches. Compared to the class, therefore, headroom is not the usual compromise.

What the $1,799 Buys

What you get for the money is a lot of standard equipment. For example, the box includes an anti-condensation mat, a memory foam mattress and insulated honeycomb panels. Three-mode LED lighting, a wraparound awning on four rods and a shoe bag also ship standard. One caveat belongs up front. ALL-TOP is a China-based OEM building for other brands as well as its own, and its published track record sits in awnings, recovery gear and air compressors rather than hard-shell tents. Still, our morning with it covered the walk-around only. Nobody on our side slept in it, drove with it, or weather-tested it.

Hard Shell Setup and Installation: Three Minutes to Camp

From Latch to Awning

Deployment is the reason this category exists. First, you flip two latches, pull the nylon strap, and the gas struts lift the shell. Then you drop the telescoping ladder and slide in four rods to open the awning. ALL-TOP claims under four minutes each way. Rick reported about three minutes, which tracks with what we watched. For a hard shell wedge tent, therefore, it is quick.

Finally, pack-up runs the same steps backward. The detail worth paying for sits inside: your bedding stays in the shell while it is closed. You roll into a dispersed site at dusk and climb straight up, instead of unpacking a truck bed first.

Eight Bolts and Four Sets of Hands

Similarly, Rick called the install simple, and he put a number on it: eight bolts. Next, he mounted the tent to a Spider A-series bed rack on his truck. Getting it up there took four people, because his truck sits tall and the unit weighs 177 lbs dry.

What Your Rack Has to Carry

Before you order, do the math on your roof rack weight capacity. First, check dynamic load, the rating which applies while you drive. Static capacity typically runs three to six times the dynamic figure, therefore the driving number binds first. For example, factory crossbars on a crossover will not carry 177 lbs plus two adults. Sleeping Space Inside the Hard Shell

The 90-Inch Deck and a 2-Inch Mattress

Ninety inches of sleeping length is the standout number for any hard shell wedge tent. The iKamper BDV Duo gives you 83.75 inches while the Roofnest Falcon 3 EVO Air gives you 80. If you stand over six feet tall, the extra half foot decides whether your feet touch fabric. Width lands at 51.5 inches, an inch and a half under a standard full mattress.

The mattress is 2 inches of memory foam sitting on an anti-condensation mat. However, two inches runs thin for the segment, and it is the one thing Rick would change. Interior Storage in the Hard Shell

Storage gets more attention here than the price of this hard shell wedge tent suggests. An overhead cargo panel on elastic cords sits above your head. Also, pockets run along both side walls. Finally, a shoe bag hangs outside in a thick PVC-style material.

Likewise, the suede-lined walls are a finish touch you notice more at $1,799 than at $3,000.

Lighting, Ventilation and Weather Sealing

Lighting and Where the Power Comes From

A dimmable LED strip runs the ceiling perimeter, with a wall switch for color, power and brightness. Three color modes are on tap, including a warm amber. Notably, the tent has no onboard battery, so you supply power. Rick runs an Anker power station, and wire pass-throughs on both sides let the cable in without leaving a gap.

Windows, Vents and Blackout

Large windows sit on both sides. The screen zips on the outside while the solid panel zips inside, so you vent without opening the tent to bugs. Asked how dark it stayed at sunrise, Rick described near-total darkness. Especially in the mountains, anyone who sleeps past first light gains a real benefit.

Also, two roof vents handle the moisture you exhale overnight. In addition, the anti-condensation mat under the mattress targets the same problem. The Awning and the T-Slot Roof

First, the awning wraps a long way around the perimeter. Also, the four support rods are beefy rather than the bendy tubes you find on a budget hard shell wedge tent. None of the four rivals in our comparison table includes an awning at any price, which makes this one unusual in a $1,799 package.

Next, the roof carries T-slots all the way around. Therefore you have a mounting surface for a bike, a RotopaX or, more sensibly, solar. Rick plans to run panels up there, and the 90.5 by 55 inch footprint makes 300 to 400 watts realistic. ALL-TOP publishes no roof load rating, so confirm the limit with Spider Roof Rack first.

What Rick Says After Several Weeks

Here is the state of the evidence. The Apexcamp is new, so no independent owner reviews exist on Reddit, Expedition Portal or the retailer’s page. Rick, who has camped in this hard shell wedge tent for several weeks, is the only published owner account.

His Three Favorites and His One Complaint

His likes came fast, notably. Specifically, the awning topped the list, then the lighting, then the pockets and storage. Likewise, he described the install as simple and the setup as about three minutes.

In contrast, his criticism was singular: the mattress. He wishes it were thicker. Two inches puts the Apexcamp behind the iKamper BDV Duo at 2.75 inches. Still, a topper erases the problem, so plan for the extra spend.

What ALL-TOP’s Track Record Shows

ALL-TOP holds a 4.74 out of 5 average across 1,549 Judge.me reviews, although only 8 percent are order verified. Notably, those reviews cover awnings, recovery gear and air compressors, not this tent. Above all, owner praise clusters on price-to-value and fast support. Complaints cluster on hardware finishing, such as a bent bracket in shipping.

How This Hard Shell Wedge Tent Compares

Compared to the premium options, this hard shell wedge tent trades weight for money and space. It is the heaviest option here, yet also the longest and thinnest when closed. Prices below were read on September 1, 2026.

Where This Hard Shell Wins and Where It Gives Ground

Two caveats belong in the value math. Shipping runs $200 to the West Coast, $300 to the Midwest and $400 to the East Coast, so your landed cost sits between $1,999 and $2,199. Second, weight is the gate. If your rack tops out low, look instead at our tested 23Zero Kabari SuperFly wedge at 105 lbs.

Still, one row deserves a second look. Thule currently discounts the Basin Wedge to $1,469 from a $2,099 list, which undercuts the Apexcamp’s delivered price. Read the whole row before you act on it. The Basin Wedge closes at 12.8 inches against 6.5, sleeps you on 79 inches against 90, and ships without an awning.

Closer to home, we tested Sterling Adventure Co’s Wasatch Lite Pro aluminum wedge at 138 lbs and $2,595. In contrast, it is lighter and sleeker. The Apexcamp answers with 800 fewer dollars, a longer bed and an awning in the box.

Final Verdict on the Apexcamp Hard Shell Wedge Tent

This hard shell wedge tent suits a buyer who moves. For example, if you camp in a new spot four nights out of five, three-minute deployment with bedding already inside changes the shape of the trip. In addition, the 90-inch deck, the 59-inch peak and a standard awning mean this aluminum rooftop tent carries more equipment per dollar than any wedge on our table.

Conversely, the trade-offs are equally clear. At 177 lbs it is the heaviest wedge on our table, so mid-size SUVs and low roof rack weight capacity ratings are out. Similarly, the 2-inch mattress needs a topper for most sleepers. Because the model is new, no long-term owner record exists on leaks, gaskets or strut life.

On value, therefore, the honest number is the landed one. Between $1,999 and $2,199 delivered, the Apexcamp costs more than a discounted Thule Basin Wedge and about the same as a Freespirit Recreation Aspen Lite XL. Against both it wins on bed length, closed height and included gear, while losing on weight.

Recommended for truck and full-size SUV owners with a rated bed rack and a need for sleeping length. If your rack tops out below 177 lbs, look elsewhere. Likewise, if you refuse to buy a mattress topper, the 110 lb Aspen Lite XL fits better, although its 3-inch Aircore mattress is a paid upgrade there too.
