Oshawa Silverado 1500 Production Ends in November
GM will end production of the light-duty Oshawa Silverado 1500 in November, according to The Globe and Mail. Spokesperson Jennifer Wright confirmed the timing. However, the Ontario plant stays busy because it keeps building the Silverado HD and adds the GMC Sierra HD by 2028.
GM is investing C$144 million to retool the plant, a plan announced after August talks with Unifor, which represents 1,800 workers there. Wright said employment levels will stay the same. Also, GM announced in 2025 it would raise Silverado 1500 output at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, plant. Consequently, some light-duty volume has a new home. We covered when the union report surfaced, and this confirmation adds a firm end date for the 1500.
Most shoppers will see no change at the dealer. In my view, the assembly plant matters less than the trim and the price. Still, the shift matters for tariff context and for anyone who wants to know where a truck came from, so the sections below cover both.
Whichever plant built your truck, a 2019 to 2026 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Short Bed still needs a protected bed and clean floors. Three listings state fit for this body style: the Rough Country Truck Bed Mat, the Tyger Auto T1 Soft Roll-up Tonneau Cover, and the YITAMOTOR Floor Mats, which suit Crew Cabs with the rear underseat storage box.

What Is Driving the Oshawa Silverado Move
Volume drives the plan, according to Jeff Gray, president of Unifor Local 222. He said heavy-duty Silverado output alone would not keep two shifts running. Therefore, the union pushed for the GMC truck during the August talks. Gray also said GM is moving about 50,000 light-duty units a year to Fort Wayne to please the U.S. president. However, this is the union’s position, not a GM statement.
Tariffs add pressure because the United States charges 25 percent on the non-U.S. content of Canadian-made vehicles. Also, the rate is scheduled to rise to 50 percent by January 1, with auto parts included. Meanwhile, about 90 percent of the vehicles built in Ontario ship to the U.S. Our truck tariff explainer covers how a VIN shows the build country and what the date means for your purchase.
Not everyone expects every plan to hold. Greig Mordue, an engineering professor at McMaster University, said automakers often abandon investments announced during bargaining. Sam Fiorani of AutoForecast Solutions offered the counterpoint, noting plant investments take years to implement and rarely vanish soon after an announcement. For now, GM confirms only the November end date for the 1500.
Which Oshawa Silverado Trims Are Affected

A published build list from February 2025 shows Oshawa built the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Short Bed in WT, LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country trims. The same list shows no Crew Cab Standard Bed from the plant. Therefore, a Crew Cab Short Bed in one of those five trims is the truck most likely to carry an Oshawa VIN.
Off-road buyers shopping a light-duty truck have little to track. The list names no Trail Boss or ZR2 among the Silverado 1500 trims Oshawa built. Our 2027 Silverado off-road guide covers both trims for overlanders.
Check the plant before you buy. First, read the window sticker, which lists the final assembly point. Next, look at the first character of the VIN: 1 means the United States, 2 means Canada, and 3 means Mexico. Finally, enter the VIN in the NHTSA decoder, which lists the plant city.
What This Means for You

The announcement changes little for owners and shoppers today. Specifically, it changes where some future trucks get built and which trucks carry a Canadian VIN.
Owning an Oshawa Silverado
The reports describe future production only, so trucks already built stay as they are. Likewise, nothing in the announcement changes how your truck drives or tows. A VIN starting with 2 tells you where the truck was assembled, nothing more.
Shopping for a Silverado 1500
Oshawa trucks already built should stay on dealer lots until they sell, so expect to find some after production ends. Start with the trim you want, then compare prices in our 2027 Silverado price guide. Ask the dealer for the window sticker to confirm the assembly point.
Buying a Heavy-Duty Pickup
HD buyers gain the most. GM is boosting heavy-duty Silverado output in Oshawa, and the GMC version joins by 2028. The Globe reports the GMC truck is much the same as the Chevrolet, with different trim and options. As a result, buyers get more supply now and a second badge later. A shopper who wants an Oshawa-built heavy-duty truck this year buys the heavy-duty Silverado, because the GMC version has no start date yet.
Because a heavy-duty Silverado often tows heavy trailers, a tire losing air needs an early warning. The TST 507 Tire Pressure Monitoring System with 4 Cap Sensors and Color Display reports pressure and temperature at each trailer wheel, so you catch a slow leak early.

A color display watches each trailer tire and sounds an alert when pressure or temperature drifts.
- Rechargeable 3.5 inch color display with audible and visual alerts
- Tracks pressure, temperature and rapid leaks
- User-replaceable CR2032 sensor batteries
- Four cap sensors cover one two-axle trailer, so a truck plus trailer needs extra sensors
- The display needs a Micro-USB recharge now and then
Final Thoughts
Oshawa ends light-duty Silverado work in November, so only the build location changes. The Silverado 1500 keeps rolling out of plants in Indiana and Mexico.
My advice is to choose the trim and price first and treat the plant as a tiebreaker. When tariffs matter to you, the VIN check takes a minute and names the country.
If you tow heavy loads, the HD trucks Oshawa keeps deserve a look, and the GMC version adds a second choice if the plan holds. For an off-road Silverado 1500, the Trail Boss and ZR2 are not on the Oshawa build list, so this news does not change your shopping. Watch for GM to name a start date for the GMC truck, the one detail still missing.
FAQ
When does Oshawa Silverado 1500 production end?
GM will stop building the light-duty Silverado 1500 in Oshawa in November. Spokesperson Jennifer Wright confirmed the month but gave no exact day.
Which Silverado 1500 trims did Oshawa build?
A published build list shows Crew Cab Short Bed models in WT, LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country trims. The list shows no Crew Cab Standard Bed from the plant.
How do you check where a Silverado was built?
Read the window sticker for the final assembly point. Then check the first VIN character, where 1 means the United States, 2 means Canada, and 3 means Mexico. The NHTSA decoder also lists the plant city.
Is the Silverado HD still built in Oshawa?
Yes. GM is boosting heavy-duty Silverado output in Oshawa, and the plant adds the GMC version by 2028.
Do tariffs apply to a Fort Wayne Silverado?
Not under the Canadian-vehicle rule. The U.S. tariff covers the non-U.S. content of Canadian-made vehicles. A truck assembled in Indiana is not an import from Canada, so the Oshawa tariff rate does not describe it.
