VEVOR listed its “2kW” unit at $125.99 and its “8kW” unit at $125.39 at Home Depot in August 2026, a 60 cent gap. However, the bigger label delivers worse comfort, more soot and more failed starts inside a small insulated build.

The number nobody prints on the box matters more: minimum sustained output. Every diesel air heater modulates down to a floor, and below the floor it shuts off and restarts. Notably, the floors cluster far closer together than the peaks do.

Two details here drive real decisions. First, the Espar D4L modulates to 900 W, within 50 W of the D2L floor. Stepping up a size costs almost nothing in low-end control on the Espar platform. How to Read the Sizing Table

Diesel heater sizing runs opposite to intuition here. Soft shelters are small and still demand the most heat, because fabric offers roughly the thermal resistance of still air. Hard-sided insulated builds are larger and demand the least. Notice how many rows resolve to the 2kW class once a wall has foam in it. The insulated Sprinter row deserves a second look. Its 2,700 BTU/hr load sits below the 2,900 BTU/hr floor of the smallest name-brand 2kW unit. So even the smallest genuine heater on the market will not modulate down to a Sprinter 144 build at 20°F. It will cycle. Everything larger cycles harder.

Why 5kW and 8kW Labels Overstate Output

Fuel sets a hard ceiling on heat. Diesel carries 137,381 BTU per gallon according to EIA figures published by the EPA, or 36,292 BTU per liter. Multiply a heater’s published fuel rate by 36,292, then by about 0.85 for realistic efficiency. The result is a calculated ceiling rather than a lab measurement, although no unit exceeds it.

What the Fuel Math Shows

Espar’s M2 D4L and the VEVOR “8kW” spec sheet both publish 0.51 L/hr at full output. One calls itself 4 kW. The other calls itself 8 kW. Same physics, different marketing departments.

Run the same arithmetic across the name brands and every one lands between 0.87x and 0.92x of its calculated ceiling. In other words, they burn slightly more fuel than their rating implies, which is what honest efficiency looks like. By contrast, Hcalory names a single SKU “5kW-8kW” and sells one burner under two numbers. An independent tester at The Technology Man weighed an Hcalory TB-MAX across a 3 hour 50 minute run. The measured burn came to 0.50 L/hr, roughly 4.5 kW by the formula above.

One caveat belongs on the sharpest row. VEVOR’s 27,200 BTU listing shows 0.24 L/hr, most likely a data-entry error rather than a different machine. For comparison, the same brand’s “2kW” listing shows a higher 0.26 L/hr maximum. Read it as evidence of unaudited spec fields instead of a deliberate claim. Temperature, Insulation and Altitude Adjustments

Three corrections turn a table number into your number. Diesel heater sizing goes wrong most often at this stage, so apply them in order.

Adjust for Temperature

Heat loss tracks the inside-outside difference in a straight line. At a 60°F difference, multiply the table load by 1.5. Raise the multiplier to 2.0 at an 80°F difference. A van showing 2,700 BTU/hr at 20°F outdoors needs about 5,400 BTU/hr when the overnight low hits minus 20°F.

Adjust for Insulation

Compare two rows of the sizing table at identical volume. A bare metal Sprinter shell loses about 14,000 BTU/hr, while the same shell lined with 1.5 inch polyiso loses about 2,700. Call it a multiplier near 5 for bare metal and near 2 for a half-finished build. Polyiso also drops from about R-5.6 per inch at 75°F to R-5.0 at 15°F, so it weakens as the night gets colder. Thermal bridging through the steel ribs then pulls a nominal R-8.4 wall down to an effective R-4 to R-6.

Adjust for Altitude

Air density falls about 3% per 1,000 feet. Therefore an uncompensated heater at 8,000 feet runs rich, makes soot and loses roughly a quarter of its usable output. Eberspächer switches its heaters into high-altitude mode above 1,500 meters, or 4,921 feet, which marks the practical line for manual adjustment. Automatic compensation varies more than buyers expect. Webasto’s Air Top Evo 40 compensates to 18,044 feet. Meanwhile the larger Evo 55 stops at 7,218 feet, so buying up in the same family costs you 10,800 feet of capability. Espar’s S2 and M2 compensate to 9,843 feet.

Safety note: Altitude compensation reduces soot, though it does nothing about carbon monoxide from a cracked exhaust or a leaking combustion chamber. Run a battery-powered CO alarm at sleeping height in any shelter with a heater in it, regardless of size or brand.

The Oversizing Trap in Diesel Heater Sizing

Diesel heater sizing fails in a predictable sequence once the unit runs well past the load. An oversized heater never reaches its designed operating temperature. Manufacturers already treat deposit buildup as a normal-running problem. Webasto’s Evo 40/55 service manual notes the fuel pump delivery drops for 10 seconds every 10 minutes. The stated reason is “to increase the burner service life in continuous operation.” Separately, Eberspächer tells biodiesel users to run the heater at its highest setting for 30 minutes. Two or three such cycles burn off accumulated residue. Neither document mentions oversizing or load level, so read both as evidence of how readily these burners collect residue rather than as proof of the sequence above.

If your calculated load lands below the smallest option’s floor, the fix is not a bigger heater. Instead, duct part of the output outside the living space or crack a vent. 2kW vs 5kW Diesel Heater: Which Size Fits

The honest comparison is not 2kW against 5kW. Instead, it is a genuine 2kW against a clone whose “5kW” and “8kW” labels both describe a burner delivering 3.3 to 4.6 kW. Once you price the claims correctly, the decision narrows fast.

Pick the 2kW class for any insulated van, truck camper, teardrop or truck canopy. Its 2,900 BTU/hr floor sits close to what a hard-sided insulated build loses at 20°F. Meanwhile its 0.28 L/hr peak burn stretches a 5 gallon jug past 60 hours. A 2kw diesel heater also draws about 0.5 A running, which barely registers against a lithium bank.

Pick the 4kW class for a ground tent, a rooftop tent, or genuine sub-zero use where the temperature multiplier doubles your load. A bare metal shell and a 12 by 14 wall tent both sit at or beyond its ceiling. For those two, insulation or a wood stove comes first.
