Overview

GM is turning Super Cruise trucks into the default on its high-end 2027 pickups. In its October 20 shareholder letter, Mary Barra said GM will make the system standard on high-end Silverado and Sierra trims and optional on most others. GM also expects Super Cruise penetration across its truck portfolio to grow 4-5x next year.

Chevrolet lists the system as standard on the Silverado High Country and ZR2. Likewise, GMC lists it as standard on the Sierra AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate. Both brands offer it as an option on lower trims, specifically the Silverado, Trail Boss and Sierra Elevation.

For off-road buyers, the key point is where the system works. GM describes Super Cruise as working on mapped roads with clearly visible lane markings, so expect it to sit idle on a trail. Even so, several standard trims are off-road models. A ZR2 or Sierra AT4X buyer therefore pays for the system whether or not the truck uses it on dirt.

Air-Down Gear for 35-Inch Tires

Both off-road flagships ride on 35-inch tires, so a truck driving the interstate hands-free still needs air-down gear at the trailhead. Start with the VIAIR 400P portable air compressor. Next, add the ARB ARB505 Deflator Kit and the JACO ElitePro Tire Pressure Gauge.

Silverado and Sierra Trims With Super Cruise

Chevrolet makes Super Cruise standard on the Silverado High Country and ZR2, with a three-year OnStar Super Cruise plan. The Silverado and Trail Boss trims, by comparison, offer it as an option. On price, the ZR2 lists at $79,995 with destination, while the Trail Boss lists at $63,995, according to our 2027 Silverado price guide.

GMC goes further. The Sierra AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate all get the system as standard equipment, with three years of OnStar One included. Only the Elevation, though, lists it as an option. Our 2027 GMC Sierra price guide shows what each of those trims costs.

What Super Cruise Trucks Cost After Three Years

GM says Super Cruise vehicles include three years of the OnStar plan with purchase. Once the term ends, however, GM says owners pay for a plan starting at $39.99 a month, with discounts for yearly billing. Put another way, the plan costs $479.88 a year at the monthly rate.

Take a ZR2 owner who keeps the truck for eight years. This owner pays for five years of plan, about $2,400 at the monthly rate before any yearly discount.

On the lower trims, the option price sits on top of the plan cost. GM Authority reports the package at $3,105 on the Silverado, Trail Boss and Sierra Elevation. Our Sierra options and package prices guide lists the full table.

Where Super Cruise Trucks Work and Where They Stop

GM describes Super Cruise as handling steering, acceleration and braking on compatible roads under certain conditions. The driver, though, must still watch the road. It began on divided highways, and GM says it now covers secondary roads mapped with clearly visible lane markings.

Those limits matter off-road. GM says the system relies on high-definition maps and mapped roads with visible lane markings. Expect it to sit idle on trails and other unmapped routes. Its value sits in the highway miles between your driveway and the trailhead.

Hands-free towing is the other draw. GM added Hands-Free Trailering on the 2022 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500. In addition, Chevrolet says the new Silverado brings hands-free driving to towing up to 13,600 lbs. However, GM notes automatic lane changes are not available while trailering. Our 2027 Silverado off-road guide covers the rest of the ZR2 hardware.

Eyes-Off Driving and the Pickup Timeline

Looking ahead, GM plans to add eyes-off driving in 2028, starting on the Cadillac Escalade IQ. On October 21, GM said it will expand autonomous highway driving to its highest-volume lineups, including full-size SUVs and light-duty pickups. The announcement text gives no model year for pickups.

GM also says its new central computer offers roughly 40 times the computing power of today’s vehicles. According to GM, the Silverado follows after the platform’s 2028 debut on the Escalade IQ. Because the 2027 trucks arrive earlier, do not buy one expecting eyes-off driving.

What This Means for You

To start, look at the trim you want. If you shop a ZR2 or Sierra AT4X, Super Cruise comes with the truck. The only open question is what you pay once the three included years end. Plans start at $39.99 a month, or $479.88 a year at the monthly rate.

Lower trims work differently. On a Trail Boss or Sierra Elevation, the system is a $3,105 option, as GM Authority reports. With the option, a Trail Boss lists at $67,100, about $12,900 below the ZR2. Count your highway miles first. A long interstate run to a trailhead is where hands-free driving pays off. In contrast, a weekend on two-track offers no such payoff.

If you tow a camper, hands-free towing is the strongest reason to pay. You still change lanes yourself, though, since GM disables automatic lane changes while trailering.

Buyers hoping for eyes-off driving in a 2027 truck should wait. GM starts the feature in 2028 on the Escalade IQ, with no pickup date given. Before you order, confirm the plan term and option price on the window sticker. After all, GM Authority’s numbers are reported figures.

Recovery Gear for Where the Maps End

Super Cruise stops where the maps stop, so recovery gear matters more once the road turns to dirt. Pack the MAXTRAX MKII recovery boards first. Then add the ALL-TOP Kinetic Recovery Rope and the Rhino USA Synthetic Soft Shackle Rope.

Final Thoughts

Super Cruise trucks suit the buyer who drives long highway stretches or tows a camper, especially one who already shops a ZR2, Sierra AT4X or Denali. For this buyer, the system comes with the truck and the first three years are covered.

The trade-off is cost and scope. You pay for a plan after year three, and the system sits idle on the trail. As a result, buyers who spend most weekends on dirt should weigh the $3,105 option carefully before adding it to a Trail Boss or Elevation.

If highway time is a small share of your driving, skip the option and spend the money on tires and recovery gear. On the other hand, if you drive far to reach the trail, those highway miles are where the system helps, and the top trims are easier to justify now. Once the pavement ends, the driving is all yours.
