Ford Speedometer Recall Overview

The Ford speedometer recall covers 102,159 trucks. In some 2025-2026 Super Duty trucks and 2026 F-150s, the analog tachometer and speedometer needles might stick or swing erratically. Ford filed the paperwork with NHTSA on October 6, 2026, as campaign 26V653.

The company knows of no crashes, fires or injuries tied to the defect. Ford estimates 1% of the covered trucks carry it, which works out to roughly 1,000 vehicles. Because Ford did not build the trucks in VIN order, your VIN gives the only reliable answer.

NHTSA’s record flags no park-it advisory, so nothing in it tells you to stop driving. The repair is free but not ready: dealers replace the cluster when parts arrive, which Ford expects in December 2026. This recall is also far smaller than Ford’s 741,195-vehicle Ford F-150 rollaway recall, but a gauge you cannot trust still needs a plan. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls today.

How to Spot a Wrong Speed Reading

Ford lists one warning sign. If your cluster has a digital speed readout, you might see it disagree with the needle. Without a digital readout, you need another source to compare against. A Bluetooth OBD-II adapter plugs into the port under the dash and sends speed and engine rpm from the truck’s computer to a phone app.

The Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+ pairs with both iPhone and Android and works with apps such as Car Scanner ELM OBD2. It also reads stored trouble codes.

Which Trucks Are in the Ford Speedometer Recall

Ford’s filing lists seven models. The F-250 leads with 43,300 trucks, followed by the F-350 at 26,354, the F-550 at 12,260, and the 2026 F-150 at 10,570. Behind them, the F-450 adds 6,847, the F-600 adds 2,827, and a single F-750 completes the list. Together, the Super Duty trucks total 91,588.

The Super Duty trucks are 2025 and 2026 models built between December 14, 2024 and April 17, 2026. All F-150s are 2026 models built from August 22, 2025 until spring 2026. Meanwhile, the lone F-750 was built on November 21, 2025. Not every truck in those windows is covered, because Ford says the trucks were not produced in VIN order.

Notably, neither NHTSA nor Ford names trims. Ford Authority reports an analog cluster with a four-inch screen is standard on the 2026 F-150 XL and STX, and the STX Mid Package swaps in a 12-inch digital cluster. Therefore, XL and STX owners should check first, but nobody should rule out a truck by trim alone. If you run a Tremor or another trail-ready Super Duty, check your VIN before your next trip.

What Fails and Why FMVSS 101 Applies

The suspect part is the L1 analog cluster module, supplied by Visteon. Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group started reviewing reports of stuck or inaccurate needles in late spring 2026. The company blames supplier process deficiencies and says tool maintenance at the supplier on January 15, 2026 resolved them. However, Ford reports it does not fully understand the exact nature of the deficiencies.

As of September 16, 2026, Ford had logged 18 warranty reports and 93 field reports tied to 79 vehicles. Also, those reports date from January 29, 2025 to August 11, 2026. Ford’s Field Review Committee approved the recall on September 29, 2026.

FMVSS 101 is the federal standard for controls and displays. Ford decided the trucks meet its stated speedometer requirements but might not meet the full intent of the standard. The company then raised the question with NHTSA’s Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance, which agreed. So the defect became a safety recall even without a reported crash.

Do not confuse this with Ford’s August 2025 recall of more than 355,000 F-Series trucks. Those trucks had digital cluster screens prone to going blank because of a software fault. This recall involves physical needles.

Repair Timeline and Free Remedy

Ford’s schedule called for dealer notice on October 9, and NHTSA made VIN lookups available on October 7. Interim owner letters go out October 26 through 30. However, they explain the risk, not the repair. Ford then plans to mail remedy letters December 7 through 11.

At the dealer, a technician replaces the instrument cluster module. Ford says the new part has been validated for proper operation. The visit costs you nothing. Moreover, Ford says it will use its general reimbursement plan, so keep the receipt if you already paid for a cluster repair.

Our guide to Ford recall delays and what to do explains how to track your recall until parts arrive. Because parts have not arrived, treat December as a target, not a promise.

What This Means for You

NHTSA’s record flags neither a park-it nor a park-outside advisory. So you manage the risk while you wait for the fix. Ford also says it knows of no accidents, which is reassuring but not a guarantee. If your needle already sticks, tell your dealer and file an NHTSA complaint at nhtsa.gov.

Check Your VIN for the Ford Speedometer Recall

Enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or call Ford at 1-866-436-7332. Model and year alone will not tell you. My advice: do this today instead of waiting for the October 26 letter. While you are there, also check for open recalls such as the F-150 front seat bolt recall. If you are shopping for a used 2025-2026 Ford truck, run the VIN before you sign.

Add a Second Speed Reference

Your phone’s GPS speed works as a quick cross-check if you mount the phone where you see it without looking down. A dash or vent mount does this job, and the same mount holds a phone running an OBD-II app. Check your state’s rules on mount spots, and keep the mount clear of airbag panels. Neither tool fixes the cluster. They only tell you when the needle is wrong.

The VANMASS Car Phone Holder, the iOttie Easy One Touch Signature Dash/Windshield Mount and the VICSEED Long Arm Car Phone Holder all hold large phones. Suction cups grip smooth plastic best, so with a grained dashboard, use the windshield, or use the vent clip on the VANMASS or VICSEED.

Drive With a Margin Until December

Leave extra room in school zones, construction zones and speed traps, because a stuck needle might hide an over-the-limit speed. If you tow or carry a camper, our guide to how much truck a hard-side camper needs shows why heavy loads lengthen stopping distances. In my view, a tachometer stuck in place on a long grade is the part worth taking seriously, because you lose your check on engine speed.

Keep a short log as well. When the needle and GPS disagree, pull over safely and note the date and both readings. Hand the log to your service advisor when the remedy letter arrives. Finally, skip the junkyard cluster swap, because a used module might carry the same suspect part.

Final Thoughts

This recall is more annoying than frightening, because the repair costs you nothing. However, NHTSA says a wrong speed reading raises the risk of a crash, so treat the needle as suspect until the new cluster goes in.

If your truck is on the list, take two small steps today. Check the VIN, then set up a second speed source so you do not rely on the needle alone. Afterward, you only need to wait for the mail and book the dealer when parts land. I am glad Ford filed this recall before any reported crash, and I hope December arrives on schedule.

FAQ

Is it safe to drive during the Ford speedometer recall?

Ford knows of no accidents, and NHTSA flags no park advisory. However, check a second speed source such as GPS, and leave extra margin until the cluster is replaced.

Which trucks does the recall cover?

It covers 2025-2026 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 and F-600 Super Duty trucks, 2026 F-150 pickups, and one 2026 F-750. Check your VIN to confirm.

When will Ford fix the cluster?

Interim letters go out October 26 to 30, 2026. Ford expects the remedy in December 2026 and plans remedy letters December 7 to 11.

Does the repair cost anything?

No. Dealers replace the part for free, and Ford says it will use its general reimbursement plan for earlier cluster repairs. Keep your receipts.

Is this the same as Ford’s blank cluster recall?

No. The 2025 recall involved digital screens going blank from a software fault. This one involves stuck or erratic needles on analog clusters.
