Inflatable Camp Tent Reviews: Four Reliable Choices for Overlanders

Over the years, my overlanding adventures have taken me through countless terrain, climates, and, of course, gear setups. During that time, I’ve tested dozens of tents—some good, some bad, and a few that were truly exceptional. As inflatable camp tents have gained in popularity, it’s become clear that there’s a growing demand for reliable, easy-to-set-up shelters that offer both comfort and durability for any adventure.

Considering this trend, I thought it would be helpful to share my experience with four of my favorite inflatable camp tents I’ve tested to date. These tents are a mix of budget-friendly options and luxury setups, catering to different needs and preferences. Whether you’re a weekend warrior looking for a small, affordable tent or an overlander who wants a tent that offers the ultimate in space and comfort, I’ve got you covered!

Inflatable Camp Tent Review: Sonmez Outdoors LONDON MAXIA 480

The Sonmez Outdoors LONDON MAXIA 480 has been my go-to tent for the last eight months, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier with it. I even brought this tent to Overland West 2024 in Flagstaff, AZ, and let me tell you, it drew quite a bit of attention! People stopped by my camp all weekend to admire the sheer size and craftsmanship of this tent.

While there are 11 colors available for this model, I opted for the red version, which, as a professional photographer, reminds me of those iconic red sailboats set against the icebergs in Greenland. It truly stands out, whether in the lush greenery of Big Bear, the rocky banks of the Kern River, and points in between.

This tent is nothing short of spectacular. Priced at $6,600, it’s definitely a premium investment, but you can see where every dollar goes. The craftsmanship is top-tier, and the materials used are truly four-season quality. The canvas fabric is not only durable but also provides excellent insulation, whether you’re braving the winter cold or shielding yourself from the summer heat.

One of the key highlights for me is the interior space. With 185.1 sq ft of floor area, this tent is like a small apartment on the trail. You have the option of setting up two bedrooms in the back or removing the heavy-duty Velcro walls to create one large, open room. My son always takes advantage of the privacy the rooms offer, claiming one for himself on every trip. This makes the tent perfect for families or groups who want some personal space while camping.

Setting it up is fairly straightforward, but let’s be honest—it’s a beast of a tent, weighing in at nearly 170 lbs. While I spend enough time at the gym to call it my second home, and I can usually handle the job, it’s still a tough order, even for me. My 9-year-old son always tries to help, but let’s just say his effort, while appreciated, doesn’t make a big difference in moving this hefty tent!

I can get it from the truck to the campsite on my own, but I’d definitely recommend making this a team effort if you have two people available. Trust me, even if you’re fit and strong, you’ll want to “eat your Wheaties” before tackling this setup solo. With that said, once the tent is up, it offers unmatched comfort and protection from the elements.

The windows and doors are another high point. The 14 large windows are fitted with durable clear plastic and mesh, allowing you to adjust depending on the weather. Each window and skylight has Velcro covers that you can use to block out light or retain heat. Additionally, the skylights allow for stunning views of the night sky, which is always a hit with my son on clear nights.

The tent also comes with plenty of D-rings for hanging lights or organizing gear, which adds a touch of luxury to the camping experience. One feature I didn’t expect but have come to love is the projector screen area inside the tent. It’s an incredible way to bring some of those home comforts to the outdoors, perfect for watching a movie after a long day of exploring.

Lastly, the tent’s weatherproofing is nothing short of amazing. During a heavy rainstorm on one of my Big Bear trips, the 100-percent waterproof rating kept us perfectly dry. Whether it’s rain, wind, or heat, this tent excels in all conditions. It’s definitely built for overlanders who need reliable shelter for any adventure.

If you’re looking for a top-quality Inflatable Camp Tent with a cool factor of “10”, the Sonmez Outdoors LONDON MAXIA 480 is hard to beat. The only downside is the weight, but if you’re okay with a bit of heavy lifting during setup, the space, durability, and luxury features make this tent well worth the investment. For me, it’s become a cornerstone of every trip, and I look forward to many more adventures with it!

Inflatable Camp Tent Review: Sonmez Outdoors LONDON 360 DISCOVER

sonmez-london-with-skylight

Technically, I had the Sonmez Outdoors LONDON 360 DISCOVER before upgrading to the MAXIA 480, and I’ve logged a lot more time in this beauty. As I discuss in my Sonmez Outdoors LONDON 360 Discover review, I’ve really enjoyed using this tent in the mountains during winter, including a magical experience with the first snowfall last year in Big Bear (which, as you’ll see, is one of my favorite camping spots).

During the colder months, I often head up to Big Bear on weekdays for a quick rendezvous with nature, setting up an office away from the office. I’ll have my medium-sized RBM Outdoors wood stove going, which heats the tent so well that if you get a little too excited with how much wood you’re stuffing in, you’ll turn it into a sauna!

With Starlink providing fast internet, I’ve been able to run my business from the tent—something most can’t do unless they have the same setup. Like the MAXIA 480, the 360 DISCOVER has massive clear windows and sunroofs with Velcro covers, so you can either close them up or leave them open to admire the surrounding beauty. The build quality, materials, and little touches like D-rings and a projector screen spot are also shared between both tents.

One of the reasons I love the 360 DISCOVER is its vibrant yellow color, which is stunning in the wild. In fact, I was so happy with the way it looked that I sent some photos of my tent to the team at Sonmez, and they honored me by featuring those photos on their website. How cool is that?!

Another big difference from the MAXIA 480 is the weight. The 360 DISCOVER is much more manageable for a single camper, weighing just 132 lbs (much lighter compared to the MAXIA 480’s hefty weight). It’s still a bit of a workout, but nothing I can’t handle on my own, and it’s far easier to move around.

I’ve taken this tent all over California, but I have to say, setting it up on the coast has been pure magic. There’s something about the sound of the ocean paired with the comfort of this inflatable camp tent that creates a dreamlike camping experience.

Now, let’s talk about the price. This tent comes in at just over $4,000, which is a significant drop compared to the MAXIA 480. Some people might still think it’s expensive, but trust me—after years of testing camping gear, the craftsmanship and quality of these Sonmez inflatable camp tents are unmatched, making the price well worth it.

So, if you’re looking for a top-tier tent and want something a little easier to handle, the LONDON 360 DISCOVER is a great option. And if you’re willing to go even bigger, there’s always the 480.

Inflatable Camp Tent Review: RBM Outdoors Panda Air Medium

rbm outdoors panda medium inflatable tentOK, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly inflatable camp tent, pull your chair a little closer—this one’s for you!

Not only is the RBM Outdoors Panda Air Medium the most affordable tent on this list at around $1,000, but it’s also the smallest in size. However, don’t let the size fool you. In the words of an old drill instructor from my early military days, “Small Axes Chop Big Trees.” That quote still sticks with me 33 years later, and it perfectly describes things that pack a punch far beyond their size.

This Medium Panda tent from RBM Outdoors is a gem. Coming in at just under $1,000, it’s perfect for quick weekend getaways where you want to escape with a minimal footprint. You can even pack it in your car, making it ideal for spontaneous trips.

At 77 lbs, this is much lighter than the other tents I’ve reviewed on this list, which makes it far easier to transport and set up. While RBM tents are more budget-friendly compared to the Sonmez tents, don’t underestimate their quality. They might not be as heavy-duty, but they are still very well-built and perform great in various conditions.

This tent is officially rated to sleep up to four people, but I’ll tell you from personal experience—if you’re camping with one other person, the space feels incredibly comfortable. My son and I usually use our Disc-o-Bed bunk beds in this tent to maximize space, and this setup works beautifully. The 71 sq ft of usable space may not sound like much, but with our bunks, we still have room to move around comfortably.

One of the key features that I enjoy with this tent is that even at the much lower price tag, you still get a four-season design and stove jack. I tested it during a chilly weekend in the mountains, and having the option to use a stove inside such a small tent is awesome. However, as I mentioned earlier, if you’re not careful with how much wood you stuff into the stove, you’ll quickly turn this small space into a hot desert oasis!

The inflation process is fairly straightforward and pretty quick. It does take a bit of muscle with the provided hand pump, but the effort is worth it for the comfort and protection this tent provides. Once inflated, the PVC air tubes create a stable structure that holds up well against wind and light rain. I’ve had it in both, and it performed flawlessly with no sagging or leaks.

The seven windows made of TPU allow excellent airflow, and the ability to vent the stove safely through the stove jack is a must for winter camping. Even without the stove, the tent stays cozy enough in cooler temperatures, making it an all-around solid choice for four-season use.

At 77 lbs, the Panda Air Medium isn’t exactly lightweight, but for an inflatable camp tent with four-season capability and a stove jack, it’s manageable. You’ll want to use this tent primarily for overlanding or vehicle-based camping rather than backpacking (unless you are the Hulk), but for those purposes, it’s perfect.

Overall, the RBM Outdoors Panda Air Medium is a fantastic inflatable camp tent for anyone looking to camp comfortably across all four seasons. Whether you’re going solo or bringing a companion, this tent offers luxury in a compact, budget-friendly package.

Inflatable Camp Tent Review: RBM Outdoors Panda Air Large

rbm outdoors panda large inflatable tent exterior night

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly inflatable camp tent, you’ll want to pay close attention to this one. Not only is the RBM Outdoors Panda Air Large the best bang for the buck tent on this list, but it also offers incredible value for its size.

Priced at $1,569 with an interior space of 129 sq ft, you’re looking at about $12.16 per square foot, which makes this a highly affordable option for budget-conscious campers who need larger space. Whether you’ve got a big family or simply want extra room, this tent punches far above its weight class.

rbm outdoors panda large inflatable tent interior 5

As I discuss in my RBM Outdoors Panda Inflatable Tent Review, this is one of the most reliable inflatable camp tents I’ve used, particularly in diverse climates. From the cool mountains of Big Bear to the hot deserts of Golden Valley, AZ, this tent consistently delivers outstanding performance. It reminds me of those classic explorer tents you see in movies—large, sturdy, and with that earthy tan color. But make no mistake, this tent isn’t a movie prop. It has become a cornerstone of many camping trips with my son, and in this price range, its versatility is unmatched.

rbm outdoors panda large inflatable tent exterior

One thing I love about this tent is how well it performs in different weather conditions. During a cold trip to Big Bear, it kept us warm all night long with the aid of my 4kw Planar portable diesel heater, while in the desert heat, the large windows and excellent ventilation helped regulate the temperature inside. The canvas fabric and PVC floor do a fantastic job of maintaining warmth when needed and cooling things down when it’s hot.

Another standout feature is the stove jack. Just like the Panda Air Medium, this tent heats up quickly, but because of its larger size, you have more room to manage the heat. Still, be careful—it’s easy to overheat this space if you aren’t mindful of the amount of wood you’re burning. Still, having the option of using the stove or another heat source like a diesel heater is fantastic for cold weather camping. As the summers seem to get hotter here in Southern California, I am enjoying cold weather camping more and more!

rbm outdoors panda large inflatable tent interior 6

The interior of the Panda Air Large is incredibly spacious. With 129 sq ft of usable area, you can comfortably fit four people using air mattresses or squeeze in six people with sleeping bags. The nearly 7-foot ceiling height is a luxury in itself, allowing you to stand up and move around without feeling cramped. I often use this tent with my son, and even with our gear, it feels roomy enough to enjoy with plenty of space to spare.

And if you’re like me and you’re on the tall side, having a tent that you can actually stand up straight in is so nice. As I get older and my back hurts more and more, being able to walk around and stretch inside the tent helps keep me feeling good for the day’s adventures. And when those adventures are over, I have more than enough space to lounge around and relax inside this tent.

rbm outdoors panda large doors

However, there’s one aspect I’d change—the doors don’t seal as tightly as I’d like. In really heavy winds, cold or hot air can sneak in, but this hasn’t been a dealbreaker for me. It’s something to keep in mind if you’re camping in particularly extreme weather.

All in all, the RBM Outdoors Panda Air Large is a rock star when it comes to durability, space, and versatility. And at that $12.16 per square foot price point I mentioned before, it’s also the best value option on this list. Plus, the fact that I can transport it easily, even in my Tesla, makes it all the more convenient for family adventures or solo trips. In other words, this tent is the best of all worlds – build quality, size, price, and portability!
