Ford F-150 Production Disruption: What Happened

Ford has stopped building its best-selling pickup at Dearborn Truck Plant for nearly a week. The Ford F-150 production disruption also reached Kansas City Assembly, where the UAW says Ford has canceled 15 F-150 shifts since Sept. 1. According to a company memo viewed by Reuters, Ford canceled all production crews at the Michigan plant from Thursday, Sept. 24, through Tuesday, Sept. 29. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the outage stems from a supply problem.

The timing matters if you plan to buy a truck this fall. Ford describes Dearborn Truck as the home of the gas and hybrid F-150 and the F-150 Raptor. In addition, Ford’s 2026 F-150 spec sheet lists only two assembly plants: Dearborn Truck and Kansas City Assembly in Claycomo, Missouri. Both plants have now lost F-150 output this month.

Reuters notes the F-Series has been America’s best-selling vehicle for 44 years. Even so, F-Series sales were down 11% through August, while total Ford sales fell about 10%, the news agency reported. In my view, a six-day pause on its own is no reason to panic. However, it lands on top of a year of lost output, so I would not expect deep F-150 discounts while Ford rebuilds stock.

With fewer new trucks coming, keeping your current F-150 longer makes sense. Three basics are worth keeping on hand. The OBDLink MX+ is listed on Amazon as a recommended adapter for FORScan, a Ford-focused scan app. Next, the GOOLOO GP4000 jump starter is rated for all gas engines. Finally, the VIAIR 300P portable inflator is rated for tires up to 33 inches, so check your tire size first.

What Ford and the UAW Have Said

Ford has kept quiet on the cause. “We don’t comment on supplier disruptions,” Ford spokesman Dave Tovar told the Detroit Free Press. Reuters was unable to pin down the supplier issue. Its source said the problem is unrelated to the aluminum shortage.

Union leaders filled in more details. Mark DePaoli, the UAW Region 1A director, told the Free Press the Dearborn halt runs through Sept. 30, one day past the memo’s end date. He also said Ford tied the timing partly to facility repairs. By his count, Ford sent 3,500 to 4,000 Dearborn workers home.

At Kansas City Assembly, the losses stretch back further. Jim Fisher, bargaining chair for UAW Local 249, said Ford has canceled 15 F-150 shifts there since Sept. 1. He added he thinks aluminum is the problem, although the Reuters source said otherwise. Meanwhile, Transit van production at the plant continues as usual.

About half of the plant’s roughly 8,600 workers build the F-150, the Free Press reported. Fisher put Ford’s original plan at about 67,200 model year 2026 F-150s through the end of the year. Elsewhere, Kentucky Truck Plant near Louisville, which builds the heavier Super Duty, increased truck production, Reuters reported.

How This Fits the Novelis Aluminum Recovery

Fisher’s aluminum theory has history behind it. Ford uses aluminum in the bodies of many of its vehicles, including the F-150, so the truck depends on steady sheet supply. On Sept. 16, 2025, a fire hit the hot mill at Novelis’ plant in Oswego, New York. Then a second fire struck on Nov. 20. Ford said it would lose output of up to 100,000 F-Series trucks through the end of 2025, according to a Reuters report carried by the Detroit News.

After the first fire, Ford mapped out a recovery plan. In October 2025, the company said it would build more than 50,000 extra F-Series trucks in 2026. Specifically, a new third crew of 1,200 workers at Dearborn Truck would target more than 45,000 additional gas and hybrid F-150s. Novelis restarted the Oswego hot mill in June 2026, according to the Free Press.

This new outage cuts into the catch-up plan. Although the Reuters source separates it from the Novelis aluminum problem, both events reduce the number of trucks Ford builds. Each lost shift adds to the output Ford must recover by year-end. As a result, fresh F-150 arrivals at dealers are likely to slow.

What This Ford F-150 Production Disruption Means for You

Your next step depends on where you sit in the buying process. Here is how the pause plays out in three common situations.

If You Have a Factory Order Pending

First, ask your dealer for your truck’s scheduled build week. If it falls between Sept. 24 and Sept. 30, ask the dealer for a new build date. Kansas City’s lost shifts add more risk of delay. Also confirm whether your order is a 2026 or 2027 model year build, because the two trucks differ in engines and features.

If Local F-150 Stock Runs Thin

Rival half-tons deserve a look. Compare the 2027 Silverado engine options by trim, and read our Tundra engine recall buyer checklist before you cross-shop. If thin stock tempts you to downsize, weigh your towing first. I drive a 2025 Chevy Colorado ZR2, a midsize truck. Still, for a big travel trailer, I would pick a half-ton.

If You Are Shopping From Dealer Stock

The pause does not touch trucks already on the lot, but replacements will arrive more slowly. Cox Automotive reported industry supply at 73 days at the end of August, the lowest level since April 2025. Supply split sharply by price, too. Vehicles priced above $60,000 carried more than 90 days of supply, while those at $30,000 or less carried 54 days. These are industry-wide figures, not F-150 counts. Still, pricier vehicles tend to sit longer, which favors buyers of well-equipped trims. Expect modest room to bargain, not deep discounts.

Curious where a truck came from? The 11th VIN character shows the assembly plant, per Ford’s VIN decoding guide. F means Dearborn, and K means Kansas City. Also watch for add-ons; our look at dealer installed GPS trackers covers one extra to question on new Fords. If price is your main worry, read our guide on whether to buy before truck tariffs rise.

Once you buy a new F-150 from stock, protect it before the first muddy trailhead. The WeatherTech FloorLiners set lists fitment for 2021 to 2026 F-150 SuperCrew cabs. For the bed, the LASFIT mat fits only the 5.5-foot box on 2024 to 2026 trucks. Inside the cab, the DiffCar seat covers list fitment only for XL and XLT SuperCrew seats, so check your trim first. Before you order, match your model year, cab, bed length and trim to each listing.

Should You Wait for the 2027 Ford F-150?

Ford revealed the 2027 F-150 on Sept. 15, and the changes deserve a look before you buy a 2026. A new 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 replaces the 2.7-liter as the base engine. Ford says it delivers roughly 10% to 11% more torque in everyday driving. The 5.0-liter V8 also returns to the King Ranch and Platinum trims.

Off-road buyers get new entry-level trims too. Ford added entry-level Tremor and Raptor versions, and each drops some comfort features, such as heated front seats on the Tremor and the head-up display on the Raptor. Still, both keep their off-road hardware. BlueCruise with Towing also arrives on the 2027 truck. The new F-150 Carhartt starts at $62,660 plus destination and reaches customers in early 2027, per Ford.

Cox Automotive found model year 2027 vehicles made up 12.4% of new inventory at the end of August, about half of last year’s pace. Those figures cover all brands, yet they point to thin early supply. So who should wait? Wait if you want the V8 in a King Ranch or Platinum, BlueCruise with Towing, or an entry-level Tremor or Raptor. Most other buyers are well served by a 2026 from dealer stock. For a deeper look at the engine shake-up, see our story on the 2027 F-150 engine lineup changes.

Final Thoughts

A six-day pause sounds small. However, it hits America’s best-selling vehicle line after a year of aluminum shortages, and it lands right at the model year changeover. If you have an order in or plan to shop this fall, this news stings. I think the smart play for most buyers is simple. Shop dealer stock for a 2026 with the options you need, then read the add-on list line by line before you sign.

If you want the V8 back in a Platinum or plan to tow with BlueCruise, the 2027 Ford F-150 is worth the wait. On the other hand, if your current truck runs well, keep driving it another season while Ford rebuilds supply. I will be watching Ford’s third-quarter sales report next week for the first hard numbers on this pause. Whatever you drive, buy the truck your towing and trails demand, whether it sits on the lot or rolls off the 2027 line.
