Ford recall delays now average 198 days on recalls whose fix misses the 60-day notice window. If your Bronco, F-150 or Ranger letter says “remedy not yet available,” this study shows how long those waits have run. The figure comes from an analysis of NHTSA recall data by 1Point21 Interactive, a San Diego marketing firm, and the Hearn Law Firm in Mississippi. Reporters at The Detroit News published the 198-day figure on September 23.
The study counted 22 Ford recalls from 2025 through June 2026 with no remedy inside the 60-day notice window. Meanwhile, over the longer 2021-2025 span, Ford averaged 174 days across 110 late fixes. On this longer view, Ford ranks third, behind Nissan at 299 days and Stellantis at 225 days. However, Nissan had 13 such recalls and Stellantis had 27. Compared to Stellantis and Nissan, Ford logged far more late fixes: 110, against 27 and 13.

Ford’s Response and the Fire-Risk Share
Ford, however, pushes back on the method. Spokesperson Mike Levine told The Detroit News the report “artificially inflates the recall delay rate average by excluding all recalls resolved within 60 days.” Even so, the Hearn Law Firm study page shows the scale behind the averages. Fire-risk recalls also change daily habits. A few notices, such as a 2020 Expedition and Navigator battery junction box recall, tell owners to park outside until the repair. However, the July 2026 Bronco recall carries no such order. Either way, if you see smoke or smell burning plastic, pull over, shut the engine off and get everyone out. Then move at least 100 feet away, call 911 and keep the hood closed. For a small electrical fire, a UL-listed dry chemical extinguisher of 2.5 to 5 lb on a vehicle bracket belongs in any trail kit. Still, it is no substitute for the letter’s instructions or for walking away from a growing fire.

Why Some Ford Recall Delays Run Past a Year
The longest wait in the study belongs to recall 25V347, which covers 492,145 Explorers from the 2016 and 2017 model years. Specifically, its B-pillar trim on the front doors risks detaching on the road. Ford mailed interim letters on June 5, 2025, and the final fix is anticipated in November 2026. As a result, owners face an expected wait of about 514 days for a trim part.
Software fixes move faster, although not always. For example, recall 26V123 covered 889,950 Escape, Explorer, Corsair and Aviator models whose rearview camera image might appear flipped. Ford filed it on March 3, 2026, with software “not available.” Then dealers received the update, and owner letters went out on June 23, 2026.
Hardware, in contrast, is the slow lane. Recall 25V467 covers 694,271 Bronco Sport and Escape models with the 1.5L engine, where a cracked fuel injector risks an underhood fire. As a stopgap, dealers added leak detection software, a job Ford rates at under one hour. Meanwhile, Ford targeted July 2026 for the new fuel rail and injectors. However, its recall page still lists the hardware remedy as “under development.”
Levine told The Detroit News the delays occur mostly when Ford must “engineer new solutions or build new supplier production lines for old parts.” Since November 2024, Ford has operated under a $165 million NHTSA consent order with an independent recall monitor.
Where Bronco, F-150 and Ranger Owners Stand
The study’s model table puts the F-150 first among Ford models with 64 recalls from 2022 through mid-2026. Next comes the Bronco with 46, while the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty sit at 35 and 34. As a result, off-road and towing owners carry a big share of Ford’s recall load. Ford recalls 2026 already reached 56 campaigns by July 1, the most of any automaker.
Bronco owners get some good news here. The July 2026 Ford Bronco engine-bay fire recall covers 565,691 trucks, and a fix existed at filing: dealers add abrasion-resistant sheathing to the engine wiring. Ford says it has not issued a Stop-Drive or Park-Outside instruction for this Ford Bronco recall. The notices went out in three phases, with base 2021-2026 Broncos last, on or about September 1.
However, other truck owners in the Ford recalls 2026 list face longer waits. For instance, 140,201 Rangers from 2024 through 2026 await a sun visor wiring fix now anticipated in October 2026, after slipping from July. Recall 26V343 needs a bigger repair, since it covers engine failures on 2025-2026 Ranger, Bronco and Explorer models. Dealers will replace the engine long block, and Ford expects the remedy in November 2026. What This Means for You
An interim letter is not a dead end. Instead, federal rules protect you while you wait. Then use the wait well with these five steps.
- Check Ford recalls by VIN every month at NHTSA’s recall lookup and at Ford’s recall page. NHTSA adds VINs to new recalls over time, so a clean result today does not settle it. NHTSA also sends free recall alerts by email.
- Read the precautions in the letter. Federal rules require the notice to list steps owners should take before the repair, such as parking outside on some fire-risk campaigns.
- Keep every receipt. Under 49 CFR 573.13, Ford must repay qualifying repairs made before the recall. For most defect recalls, the window reaches back at least one year before the filing. A copy of the receipt counts.
- Ask whether the fix is software. Ford pushed 16 over-the-air fixes from January 2025 through June 2026, and some need no dealer visit at all.
- Set expectations on a buyback. Under federal law, a repair left unfinished 60 days after you present the vehicle points to a replacement or refund. However, the clock starts only on or after the remedy date in the notice.
If You Rent, or a Warning Light Comes On
Rental fleets follow a stricter rule than private owners. The Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act covers companies with 35 or more rental vehicles. Each one must fix an open recall before renting out the affected vehicle. The one exception applies when no remedy is ready: the company first performs a temporary fix listed in the notice. I have rented a Bronco Badlands from Budget at John Wayne Airport several times for Big Bear camping trips. For renters like me, this rule puts the open-recall check on the fleet, not on you.

Final Thoughts
If you own a Bronco, F-150, Ranger or Super Duty, these Ford recall delays deserve ten minutes of planning. The late fixes average about six and a half months, and some run past a year. Therefore, the time to prepare is before your letter arrives, not after.
For me, the most useful number in this study is the 16 over-the-air fixes. After all, every recall solved over the air skips the dealer queue entirely. I have owned five Jeeps, and Jeep’s parent company Stellantis does no better here. Its late fixes were rarer than Ford’s, but they averaged 225 days. In other words, switching brands trades one kind of wait for another.
Ford led all automakers in recalls in 2025 and leads again in 2026, and some parts take months to build. The consent order also requires Ford to review past recalls. Still, a 514-day wait for trim is hard to defend. So check your VIN, save your receipts and follow the letter’s advice until the fix lands.
