How do you tell what gears are in Jeep Wrangler?

A buddy of mine just got into camping and picked up a 2019 Jeep Wrangler 4 door. He was told from the last owner that there may be different gears in the truck. How can you tell this when there is no documentation from previous owners?

Hey! It's always exciting to hear about someone getting into camping and off-roading. As for your buddy's 2019 Jeep Wrangler 4-door, there's a way to check whether it has different gears from the factory settings without any documentation from the previous owner.

One simple method is to look for a tag on the differential cover (either the front or rear). This metal tag usually lists information about the gear ratio. If the tag is missing or unreadable, you can try the following steps:

  1. Park the Jeep on a level surface and put it in neutral with the parking brake disengaged.
  2. Place a mark on the driveshaft (using chalk, paint, or tape) and on one of the rear tires.
  3. Rotate the tire one full turn while counting how many times the driveshaft rotates.
  4. The number of driveshaft rotations compared to the tire rotation will give you a rough estimate of the gear ratio. For example, if the driveshaft rotates about 3.5 times for one tire rotation, the gear ratio is likely around 3.5:1.
Keep in mind that this method may not give you a completely accurate measurement, but it should be close enough to help you determine if the gears have been changed. If you need a more accurate measurement or want to verify the results, consider taking the Jeep to a professional mechanic.

I hope this helps your buddy figure out the gear situation on his Jeep Wrangler! Have fun camping and off-roading!

So an easy way to determine your actual gear ratio is to check the tag attached to the differential cover by the cover bolts. On the tag there should be some numbering such as 3.54 or 3.73, either of those numbers will give you the stock axle ratio.
