Hanging your food up from tree during night to keep from bears?

We are going to be camping in bear country in two weeks. Do people hang their food coolers up in the air to keep bears from getting? Like tossing a rope over a trees branch and leave it hanging? We have a cooler that has a lid that locks, but I don't think it's bear proof. The handles are pretty strong on the side so I can make a rope cradle to hold it flat while hanging. Just wondering if this works or puts the food smell higher into wind stream?

That will work assuming you can get a line over a branch and get your cooler which may weigh a bit hoisted up!
