Can you cook over 4 hour wood logs?

Not to ask potentially dumb question. However I believe I know the answer to this, however a buddy of mine sees it differently. Earlier I was talking to a friend about shopping for a wood stove that I can cook on and he mentioned he just bought one and was testing it out with a 4 hour wood log. I still find this funny, but he seems to believe this is OK to use for fuel when you are cooking over. I told him they pack those logs with all sorts of chemicals so they burn long and NOT good for cooking over. Who is right?
