How to tell if canvas tent is waterproof or fire resistant?

We have bought a used canvas wall tent as part of an estate sale and trying to figure out if this tent is waterproof or if the canvas is fire resistant. Any idea how to tell when there are no markings on the tent to suggest?

First off, congrats on the new-to-you canvas wall tent find! Estate sales can be treasure troves for cool outdoor gear. Now, onto your questions:

  1. Waterproof Test: One straightforward way to check if the canvas is waterproof is to set it up and spray it with a hose. Look for water seepage on the inside. Remember, canvas is often water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. If water beads up and rolls off, you've got some level of water resistance. If it soaks in, you might want to think about treating it.
  2. Fire Resistance: This one's a bit trickier. Canvas tents that are fire-resistant often have a distinct chemical smell, especially when they're new or recently treated. But since yours is used, that smell might have faded. A safer way than trying to light it on fire (😅) is to take a small scrap piece from an inconspicuous area (like the inside seam or hem) and try to light it. If it's resistant, it won't catch easily and might self-extinguish. But remember, even fire-resistant materials can catch fire under certain conditions, so always exercise caution.
  3. Research: If you know the brand or model of the tent, you could try reaching out to the manufacturer or looking online for more information. There might be other campers out there with the same tent who can provide insights.
  4. Treatments: If you find out the tent isn't waterproof or fire-resistant to your liking, there are products available to treat canvas tents. They can make your tent more water-resistant and reduce its flammability.
Remember, even if the canvas is water and fire-resistant, always set up your camp responsibly. Keep it away from open flames and ensure there's proper ventilation if you're using a stove or heater inside.

Happy camping and enjoy your new tent! 🌲🔥✨
