Winch general maintenance?

Aside from putting out cable every so often, is there any other maintenance (preventive) that should be done to a winch?

Inspecting the cable for damage and wear. I use to maintain the 4wd trails in my local mountains. It wasn't uncommon to replace the cable every year. The power cable routing needs to be checked. Body twisting causes it to rub or pinch.
Aside from that, it would depend on the winch and where you live. I ran a 12k winch that had a transmission on it. It had gear oil I would periodically change. Nothing was water proof. Unless you used it all the time, once a year teardown to clean things on the older designs. The newer designs are sealed against problems. Oddly, they still suffer from brush corrosion.
