Running synthetic oil as important?

Are synthetic oils still important to run in your trucks? I've had this question in the back of my head for about 7 months after a mechanic at Jeep was telling me last November that due to advancements in engine technologies, cars and trucks don't need synthetic oils, and it was a waste of money. Now I've been having a hard time validating this statement and before I write it off as completely wrong, I wanted to post it here and see if anyone has heard anything similar, and on what grounds then?

It depends on your truck. However, I would say that statement is wrong. It's mostly old cars that don't need synthetic oil and newer ones do

I always run synthetic oils. Well with the exception of the first oil change, I'll run what's in the vehicle for 1000 miles and then swap out for synthetic.
