Cooking over propane fire pit - maintenance question

Actually this is more than a maintenance question. Most places don't allow real fires these days. So I'm going to modify my propane fire pit to have a grill on top of it. I can't be the first who has done this, so I'm going to ask these questions:

1. How did you get the grill to stay locked on fire pit?
2. How often did you need to clean/replace rocks in grill?
3. Any negatives to using fire pit this way?
