Can a 5lb propane tank be mounted on roof rack horizontally?

I've been trying to figure out where to mount this 5lb spare propane tank and I have a spot on my roof rack. Now I think this would look odd standing up, plus the mount wouldn't work. So it would have to be laying down horizontally to the ground. Now assuming I have this locked down good and even during an hard brake or unforeseen accident this thing is secure. Is there anything hazardous about having a propane tank on its side?

I'm near sure that isn't a good thing. With that being sideways, the liquid expands a huge amount and might be a problem.

You could mount it vertically by using some cam-lock straps

Why not mount on your cap in the back?

+1 why not mount with spare tire, that will keep it upright and out of the way. Plus it doesn't become a missile while it's mounted on back.
