How to remove diesel fuel from carpet

I managed to spill diesel on the carpet on the back of my truck and now the truck smells horrible. Any idea how I can get this smell 100% out ?

As much as you don't want to hear this, pull the carpet and the padding. Take a hose, dish soap and clean both. That means pulling at least part of the interior. Let everything dry in the sun. Smell and repeat as necessary.

In the shop, we would get heater core's leaking on the floor. Coolant would soak into the carpet and padding. Even dry the car smelled like coolant forever. The customer would clean the carpet but the underside of the carpet and the padding still had residue.

The issue there is, if the fuel got into the padding. Even though factory carpet has a rubber backing, liquids still get underneath.
A steam cleaner works well for the top but not the underside or the padding.

+1 agree, if that scent continues, you very well may need to do something about the pad under the carpet.
