Bear proofing on vehicle-based trips in bear country?

This summer we have some long camping trips coming up where we will be in bear country. Actually will you camp in areas knowing it's bear country, and there are NO bear boxes? Or will you avoid those areas? I'm not sure if they will have bear boxes or not. So do have some questions:

  1. Storing the Fridge in Bear Boxes: If we come across a sufficiently large bear box, do campers usually move the fridge into it and keep it running with a compact battery overnight?
  2. Using Pelican Cases as Bear-proof Containers: Has anyone had experience using Pelican cases, secured to a tree or vehicle, as an alternative to traditional bear canisters for food storage?

We'll still camp there, just keep your food stored away from your tent. Make sure you toss all food waste out and again separate from your tent area.
