Are two spare tires overkill?

I will be going on a long expedition across the Simpson desert and I am trying to prepare the vehicle for the trip.

I am contemplating on getting double spare tires but I am thinking about the weight penalty and cost. Do you think a double spare is actually worth it?

LOL depends on how much redundancy you want to have. Where you are going, how long gone, how far from civilization. If I was driving across Africa, hell yeah I would want 2 spares!

For the Simpson desert which is a very remote area I would say yes. What you can do is get a second spare from a mate for a few weeks and return it when the trip is done? Or buy a second hand tire which does not have to be the same just to be safe and when you are done with the trip store it.
