2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee with metal shaving in oil

A buddy just bought a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has 87,000 miles on it that he is going to set up for overlanding. I was helping him out with the oil change on it today and we noticed a bit of metal shavings in his old oil. I'm not a board certified tech, so don't claim to have answers. What could be the cause of this?
