Repairing tent pole that has snapped?

Last year, we had a tent pole snap and we tossed out the tent. I was in REI yesterday and saw that they had tent pole repair kit. Well it was just stink you put over your tent pole. Do these things work? Or is it just a temp fix for when you are in a pinch?
