Winch steel cable vs synthetic rope. What would you choose and why?

Everyone seems to be switching to synthetic lines. They are lighter, much safer when they brake, and won't rip your hands open when old. On the down side, they are not as durable and do not last a long time in mud and direct sunlight. They are also a bit more expensive.

However, just for the safety aspect I would go for a synthetic line rather than a steel cable

Steel is more durable when it comes to dragging it on top of rocks and trees, it will also last longer as it isn't affected by direct sunlight

As mentioned above, steel does have it's benefits. However, synthetic rope can in some cases handle more weight and when it breaks it doesn't recoil; therefore, your recoveries will be much safer.
