Yep, by far the biggest killer is heat. As mentioned above if you manage to bring those temps down you will be helping the box a lot

Engine bay is a the best option I think. I've seen people mount them in snorkels but I think that is pretty pointless

I try to head out camping every once or twice a week so yes I typically ado leave it inside. If I know it will be a wile before I go on another camping trip I take it out to save weight, prevent someone from stealing it, and just to keep it out of the heat or cold it gets exposed to when inside...

I would think it is for cost reasons. Also, carbon fibre may be strong but can easily get damage by rocks etc. So, a small nudge against a tree or rock can deem the while thing unusable and it is certainly not easy to repair
