Are skid plates necessary?

I have a Landcruiser and it currently runs the stock skid plates. I am thinking of upgrading to some more beefy one, would you guys say it's worth doing so?

Only you can be the judge of this, do you scrape often? If yes then yes they are. If the answer is no then they aren't
